EDITORIAL
Many eminent names, from Galileo to Har Gobind Khorana, have been associated with the Pontifical Academy of Sciences - the international and interdisciplinary scientific body subject to the direct authority of the Supreme Pontiff. Other big names that have been associated are: Lord Ernest Rutherford,
Guglielmo Marconi, Max Planck, Niels Bohr, Sir Alexander Fleming and many other Nobel Laureates. The Academy has as its goal the promotion of the progress of the mathematical, physical and natural sciences, which includes the Earth and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Kasturirangan, former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation, has become the fourth Indian to be appointed to the Academy after Dr C V Raman, Prof M G K Menon and Prof C N R Rao. With his immense contribution to the Indian space programme including the development of launch vehicles and satellite technology that have greatly benefited the society Dr. Kasturirangan's participation in the deliberations of the Academy would certainly help the international scientific community.
On the international front, Russia is once again making its mark in the space domain. In the year 2006, the country has achieved the distinction of lauching the maximum number of spacecrafts into space. Russia conducted 45% of the world's spacecraft launches in 2006, maintaining its leading position, according to the head of the Russia's Federal Space Agency. The second and third places are occupied by USA, Japan and China respectively. Apart from the achievement, Russia this week successfully launched three modernized Glonass-M satellites. This is clearly showing its sincerity and efficiency as well towards fulfilling its goal of making the Glonass system ready and fully functional by 2008. Let us expect some fast paced action on Galileo front as well in the year 2007!
