EDITORIAL

The calculation of conditional probability of the occurrence of an event considering multiple variables has been extensively used for potential zonation of events which are also easy to depict in the form of raster images. Weights of evidence modeling has also been used for similar purposes, more so in mineral exploration. The utilization of such statistical modeling techniques for generating ‘traffic jam possibility’ maps is innovative. NAVTEQ has used something similar to provide digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions. They have used the analysis of traffic patterns to offer enhanced road navigability maps to end users – so now you know how quickly you can reach a place, at what speed using which route with a far greater reliability.

From virtual globes which are windows to our earth we are moving to windows ‘into the earth’. The ‘one geology’ or ‘transparent earth’ project spearheaded by the British geological survey promises just that. We will soon be able to find out ‘what lies beneath’. Geological maps of the whole planet will be stitched and draped on a virtual globe – so what’s new? Well it is not just the surface geology but also what lies at various depths below. But Prof. De Mulder, who described this project said – it can’t show you the buried treasure. For now, we will have to be satisfied by draping surface geology maps on the likes of Google earth as shown here…
