BMs no more...
As the first step in accurately documenting the lay of the land under their ownership, the National Mapping Organisations have spent huge amounts in establishing 'Benchmarks'. These meticulously surveyed and precisely marked locations are generally not known to the uninitiated. Most NMOs like to maintain the location and details of their geodetic benchmarks a secret. This is done with the sole purpose of protecting these monuments from inadvertent or purposeful vandalism.

With the emergence of GPS, some of the oldest NMOs have discontinued the regular maintenance of their BM networks. The Ordnance Survey has abandoned some 500,000 BMs since 2000. On the other hand, the Tacloban City Municipality in Philippines has recently started a 'Ground Control Point Adoption Program'. A Municipal Engineer is given the responsibility of the protection and conservation of BMs in their barangayas.

The extreme is however in glorifying these BMs in miniature pewter replicas and earrings- they do look cute though...

  OGC Survey
Business Benefits of Using OGC Standards
Researchers from the University of Illinois and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have developed the survey in conjunction with the OGC. The survey will not only provide valuable input to research on standards development organizations and standards effectiveness, but it will help the Consortium to improve its ability to address geospatial interoperability needs. Please help OGC with their interoperability mission by taking the survey.

Along with the executive summary which will be mailed to all participants, you also stand a chance to win one of three technology prizes that will be awarded randomly to those who complete the survey. The three winners get their choice of: (1) Seagate Xtreme Black 1.5TB 3.5" Hard Drive - 7200, USB 2.0, FireWire-400, eSATA; (2) Apple iPod Touch 16GB MP3 Player; (3) Able Planet NC1000CH Clear Harmony Noise Canceling Headphones.
