The Map World Forum – inaugurated today is a congregation of the who’s who of the global geospatial academia and industry. ‘GIS is the heart of a Democracy’ said Mr. Kapil Sibal, the Hon’ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India, in his inaugural address. With the policies in place, an exponential growth of the Indian geospatial industry is expected, he said. In the plenary session, Jack Dangermond elucidated the role of ‘Geographic Information as a Public Utility’ enthralling the audience in his inimitable way. He also received the ‘GIS DEVELOPMENT – LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT’ award.

…near instantaneous distress alerts to reduce Search & Rescue response times…, instrument that measures water content of soil without physical contact with the soil…, No, these are not some wild futuristic ideas. The Canadian government is funding such and many more projects, keeping in mind the benefits that accrue from being the leader in such niche sectors of remote sensing, satellite communication, robotics etc. Today, it is not just the rich and prosperous nations who invest in space research but a large number of developing and third world countries, who by judicious spending have a space program to reckon with. The world has witnessed the edge that the USA has today, due to the very focused approach towards its Moon Missions in the 60’.The manned moon missions of the US have always been a subject of intense debate with reference to their practical applicability but the benefits are evident. India too has scheduled its first moon mission ‘Chandrayan’ for the late 2008 and a manned mission a few years later. The impetus this has given to the research in allied subjects is evident from the research papers being presented during Map World Forum. The work on the mathematical simulation of the Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI) is one such project.
