9th January 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 2

GIS in business process has been moving on the runway and appears well set to take off. There are numerous efforts by the organizations in different parts of the world to design and develop business GIS application. This is in addition to the tools/modules for Business GIS available from the leading GIS vendors. Although the industry has been not very warm in it’s response, but with the likes Microsoft and Google looking at usage of spatial data sets whether in the form of satellite image or street map, has to an extent sensitized the Industry.

What remains to be seen is that when the mapping tool will become the member of desktop office tool and people would say in one breath ‘Word, Power Point, Excel, Access & ABC GIS?

Marcelo Braghin

At the beginning of 2003, De Beers Group Exploration started the long process of standardising all their current systems. Prospecting geologists within the group rely on maps in their daily activities. The IT evolution in the last few years has made it possible for spatial information to migrate from paper to the digital world. This has been achieved with the growth of GIS and other related spatial technologies. Demand for diamonds is growing and finding new diamond deposits require the use of advanced technologies such as the most recent developments in GIS.

GIS in logistics and vehicle routing applications

Shubhabrata Marmar
ESRI, New Delhi
India

The routing of vehicles and the management of logistics operations in any company that services a fairly large geographical area can easily become quite a very complex task. The task can be simplified by the applying GIS, which automatically reduces the complexity by bringing out subtle geographic patterns and relationships that can form the basis of good decisions. Systems like ArcLogistics Route can take pain out of applications like Vehicle Tracking and Dispatch, Route Analysis, Warehouse Operations, Facilities and Depot Management, Routing and Scheduling. The ease of work has to be looked at though in the light that all of the data required for maximum accuracy may not be available.
