3rd July 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 27

One planet – many virtual globes and by the latest count, I know of at least four, each claiming better utilities than the other, though some are virtual ‘country’ offerings like ‘geoportail’ from France, and may not find a global audience or user base like Google Earth. This baby, now just over an year old has become a hot favourite and with a visionary like Michael Jones being the guiding force is sure to reach greater heights. To name one idea, suggested by Peter Morville during the recently concluded GeoTec 2006 – ‘Gaming on Google Earth Platform’. This is sure to be a money spinner, imagine playing Doom, Half Life or Prince of Persia on ‘Real’ terrain. Some of us would off course like to play ‘Sim City’.

A ‘mashup’ that I envisage is using these virtual earths for modelling social dynamics like the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) carried out by social welfare organisations in India. At present a PRA is a time and money consuming activity necessary for bringing about a community binding before embarking on social upliftment projects like ‘watershed management’. Offer the same activity as a multiplayer game and the PRA becomes delectable. So all ye virtual globe developers – are you listening…

Coming January wouldn’t it be an interesting idea to have an open house with these developers of virtual globes and earths under the Map World Forum in Hyderabad, India ? lets see if we can.
