10th July 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 28

Finally after a long wait Radarsat 2 will be up in March 2007. Years of research, toil and money will finally be vindicated. The Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) also called MODEX (Moving Object Detection Experiment) onboard Radarsat 2, will herald a new era in real time (position) change detection. The ‘Ultra-fine beam mode’ will offer a 3m ground resolution. A great asset for generating accurate DEMs.

Hardly a fortnight goes by without the mention of Google Earth by me. This week saw some major updates to the high-resolution imagery, draping large parts of India. Obviously the company is spending a whopper. Free boarders like me are totally sold out to this. I have at times had nightmares about these very ‘free’ services being overnight converted to paid. Lets see what would happen – overnight a large segment of the visitors to these sites, which largely comprises of students, researchers and tourists would find their virtual wanderings on the planet, pinching their pockets. Would we mind? Most feel it’s unfair to pay for just being able to see places and get to know about them. Very true. So who pays?

The debate ‘paid vs. free geospatial data’ continues. Plymouth county in USA has a raging debate going on after the administration declared that a fee would be levied for accessing the county GIS web site. Let us remember that there are no free lunches, but what if you want a snack? The two schools of thought i.e. ‘charge vs. no charge’ will meet for a panel discussion on ‘Pricing Policy’ in Hyderabad, India between 22nd and 25th January 2007 on the auspices of MAP WORLD FORUM. Issues of value, pricing, production and consumption of geographic information will be on the anvil. So lets all meet.
