24th July 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 30

The next step in terrain visualisation technology is ‘immersive geospatial 3D’, the logical step after plain vanilla 3D. Today, ‘immersive visualisation’ done using data simultaneously and synchronously recorded using a camera with 11 lenses, is the next best to an actual site visit with the obvious advantage of ‘repeat on demand’.

The extraction of dimensional information about buildings from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data and digital aerial images is already an established business. A mash up of this technology with immersive visualisation giving us ‘immersive geospatial 3D’ can be the next big jump…any takers.

The pace of developments in the geospatial domain is faster than the supply of qualified human resource required to exploit the technology, comments Mr. Watanabe from Sokkia. The industries can but train a handful – so, are we heading for times where technology under-exploitation is the norm?
