31st July 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 31

The world’s space programmes which saw a ‘fight to death’ race between USA and erstwhile USSR in the late 50s, has a completely different face today. Rival organisations, who also have commercial interests at stake like the Canadian Space Agency’s ‘Radarsat’ and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s ‘ALOS’ or ‘Daichi’, both supplying radar data, have joined hands with six others under an international programme – ‘Charter on Cooperation to Achieve the Coordinated Use of Space Facilities in the Event of Natural or Technological Disasters’. Europe’s – ESA, France’s CNES, India’s - ISRO, America’s NOAA and USGS, Argentina’s - CONAE, and Britain’s – BNSC along with Canada’s CSA and Japan’s JAXA are the watchdogs in the sky monitoring Gaia. All this, so that the people of this planet sleep a bit easier.

The rationality behind divulging ‘speed camera’ data on in-car navigation systems in seven European countries as a service from Tele Atlas, is in Jack Reinelt’s words –“…road statistics show speed cameras encourage European drivers to moderate their speed. In the opinion of the regulatory authorities, providing this information is a positive contribution to making the roads safer”. Going by the same rationale, let us hope and pray that making available the status of the environment of our planet through efforts like wikimapia, Google Earth, World Wind and others will be a positive contribution towards making our Earth a better and safer place.

Many years ago, in the early 80's, when we were just thinking of using a GIS a friend took me to visit a unit in the Gandhinagar Software Park, which was 'working on GIS for an overseas client'. I found that they were updating detailed maps of cities and towns created in popular CAD software. The details were mind boggling...
