 EDITORIAL

Conventionally a passive microwave radiometer has been effectively used for sea surface – temperature, salinity, wind, ozone, aerosol and other atmospheric component detection and quantification. The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission of the ESA has after more than a decade's work devised the Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) which will measure microwave radiation emitted from the Earth's surface at L-band (1.4GHz). This is the standard frequency for monitoring soil moisture content and salinity, the unique feature of MIRAS being that it is a passive sensor and will use the phase difference between the microwave signals received at two or more sensors – the MIRAS has 69 of them, arranged in a 'Y' configuration. The SMOS mission is scheduled for launch this year.
The other announcements of technological significance this week are - Launch of Ofek7- the Israeli spy satellite, the scheduled launch of Cartosat 2A – the first dedicated military satellite for India, as expected, no details are available about both the satellites and TerraSAR-X has been successfully launched from Baikonur on the 15th of June ...cheers. For land-Surveyors, Laser Technology Inc. has released the TruPulse 360, a laser range finder with their TruVector compass technology allowing the user to “ shoot from any angle”...

'...urged to blur...' has probably been the context of quite a number of messages that the CTO of Google Earth has received and the sensible reply from Google to all such 'urged' requests has been '...Anyone who flies above or drives by a piece of property can obtain similar information...'. I would rather say that the information obtained so would be almost real time and hence more detrimental, so why not declare no-fly zones all around such so-called sensitive areas, all that Google Earth gives is almost an year old high resolution data. If you do feel the urge to see 'blur', search out 'Camp David' and let me know.
