 EDITORIAL

The release of newer versions of Geographic Imager and MapPublisher for photoshoppers is yet another step towards the 'universalisation' of the geospatial tools and technologies. The global community of PhotoShop users who are well trained in 'image processing and manipulation' can easily migrate to the presently niche group of geo-techies where publication of maps and processing of satellite images is concerned. Avenza has developed these plugins to effectively use the available human skill with a steep learning curve. If we are to look back at the evolution of our domain, the milestones have been emplaced by stalwarts from almost all the sciences and arts. A more 'cosmopolitan' tool than 'GIS' would be difficult to find. So, who do we knight as a 'GeoSpatialist'? If the right to use the 'GIS' lance is restricted to a few 'knights', the growth of the geospatial industry would be stifled. The move towards restricting the right to compete for 'GIS' projects and giving surveyors, engineers and architects a higher pedestal can be considered arbitrary and is non-viable in a competitive and open economy. The verdict in the MAPPS vs. US has ensured that, all professionals in the allied sciences and arts associated with 'GIS' can fairly compete for coveted governmental contracts... at least for the near future.

We invite your views on 'Qualifications Based Selection (QBS)' and 'licence to practice' in the geospatial domain. So, who is a 'GeoSpatialist'?
