26th June 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 26

Infrastructure has been the primary government responsibility and will continue to be. Most of the infrastructure development was directly implemented and maintained by the government, untill the pressure from the public to provide better service and to larger people made the government re-think it's strategy and brought in the private partnership. It is now prevalent in our daily life and we see see toll roads, airports, sea ports, power supply and other being maintained and managed by private firms. If we extend this a little further, should we not have private firms playing an active role in managing the spatial data infrastructure. May be, with government laying down the policy guidelines and proactively partnering with the government in spatial data infrastructure, many of the developing countries could see their mapping data issue, which is critical for any infrastructure development being addressed.
