EDITORIAL
The Topcon GR-3 is the latest offering to the surveying and LBS community. Its 72 universal channels beat the u-Blox 5, fifty channel, GPS plus Galileo capability ready chip by offering the GLONASS receiving capability and a UHF digital radio too. Topcon also claims that the the receiver is designed keeping the future satellite launches in mind. In the present circumstances I would call this 'over kill'. The stalling of the Galileo program due to profitability issues has hit the headlines this week. The blame game is on with Mr. J Barrot, the EU's Transport Commissioner requesting a mandate to study “reasonable alternatives” to the current situation. The eight company Galileo consortium is sure to feel the heat. GPS chips may have 'surplus' channels than used ones if the Galileo program takes a dive. Might be, many of us will continue being satisfied using the old faithful 'low end' GPS units we bought in the summer of 06.
'Disaster-free land', is the buzz word in Indonesia. This beautiful tropical country, has had a spate of natural calamities in the last couple of years, the flooding in Jakarta being the latest. Mapping the terrain for calculating its potential to be 'disaster prone' is an application which many a times uses techniques like 'weights of evidence', 'information value', 'conditional probability' etc. The result from every modelling method has subtle differences. It would be interesting to know how real-estate developers in Indonesia will go about using these 'disaster-free' plots of land – if such really exist anywhere.
