EDITORIAL
In Ireland a new business opportunity is on the horizon for war camouflage
specialists. The rich and famous may soon be queuing up for 'Tax Camouflage'
to evade the roving eye of the tax collector. Ireland intends to use very high
resolution oblique and vertical aerial photography to track down your hidden
assets. 'Tax Shelters' may now really be built underground...
In any air travel, during the mandatory air safety demonstration, one is cautioned
and reminded that '..the nearest emergency exit might be just behind your seat...'.
This statement has almost always reminded me of the archaic map restriction policies
of many countries around the world. Just imagine if the 'MAP' of the aircraft
which one sometimes picks-up from the seat pouch was declared a 'secret' document
whose publication and availability to the lay human may cause severe risk to
the safety of the aircraft! Well, the map restriction policies are based on such
paranoia. This week's announcement in the Chinadaily states more than 700 cases
of illegal mapping projects in the People's Republic of China...Why is one not
surprised about the lack of any map overlays available for Beijing in Google
Maps? For now, let's satisfy our curiosity by ogling at 'just the satellite
imagery' of the 'Forbidden City'.
