Dependence on anyone, for satellite data even if you are able and willing to pay for it is fraught with risk. Reliability and on time delivery are just some of the issues. The advantage of having your own bird up and flying early is evident from all the agricultural and biomass modelling done by NASA for the last 38 years. The edge that local FMCG producers have in 'futures trading' due to ready, easy and many a times confidential access to global crop produce estimations is reflected on their stock market tickers. The value of information is then all the more obvious.

The rather low cost Malaysia's RazakSat hardly compensates the real loss due to inordinate delay in launch and final commissioning of the satellite. The rather unique orbit of RazakSat will considerably increase the temporal resolution of data gathered over all equatorial countries. I look forward to April 21...
