20th March 2006 VOL.2 ISSUE 12

The US - NSDI was set up in early 1994 and a new trend was set albeit necessarily, the world's countries followed. A decade later the front-runners are formulating the 'Geospatial Digital Rights Management - GeoDRM' a movement that will finally and comprehensively address among other things, the issues related to IPR in the Geospatial domain - everyone gains.

The popularity of free global geospatial data from the government (mainly the US), and its benefits are obvious. After GeoDRM a large repository of privately held data may also be more easily available, but for a price. It is strange how a large number of geospatial data users conveniently forget that 'there is nothing like free data - old data is no data'...so do we jump into the GeoDRM wagon?
