Cartographic sensitivities...
This week, we have posted two similar news items as top stories - the act of hosting interesting maps on the virtual globe. The end result is as opposite as their location on the globe. The mention of caste, rank and skin colour can result in violent reactions in some parts of the world - but not so in the USA. The openly available maps of Durham in North Carolina depict areas which in 1937 had reservations against Blacks. Old maps are historical documents and should be reproduced without any censorship. They should be considered mute reminders of all the good and bad that we have done in the past. If maps depicting a 'filthy mass' in Tokyo are raising hell for Google Earth - well then the location of places like Auschwitz should be deleted or better still renamed...Just another reaction like the one to the map on a bottle of 'Absolut'.
