Opening up to open cities
Collaboration, community management, open systems seem to be the buzzwords in every sphere. Be it Wiki or Mapshare, collaboration started being the core of large initiatives. In a way they are turning out to be blessing in taking on huge challenges that cannot be accomplished in a solitary regime. Extending the analogy to aspects of governance will probably enable today’s city governments accomplish better services and productive governance with greater ease. Many critical government interventions like police, fire, health, traffic, education, water supply can be made more effectual by public inputs. All this requires is just ‘opening’ up the data that is already in the public domain by making it accessible over the Web. A Wiki of city, for example, is a great idea to start with. Enabling citizen participation gives a sense of ownership and puts a bit of accountability on the citizen to whom the government serves. Who knows a neighbourhood better than the person who lives in it?? Creating value, distributing costs, improving service delivery, increasing transparency are just a few of the benefits that could accrue from ‘opening’ up our cities.
