Why not a GIS way to eGov?

National and state governments can streamline their services to meet the needs of citizens through effective execution of eGovernance, which brings IT closer to the common man. This also leads to development of the economy as eGovernance actually brings in a great degree of accountability. As a result, administrative functions acquire speed and citizens' interaction with different government departments become easy.

An eGov system can provide key inputs to the government's policy-making process as it involves the creation, storage, analysis, dissemination and use of information. However the success of this macro level objective will be hinged on the strengthening of governance at the grassroot level. A key digital platform that is relevant to local planning as well to the eGov drive is GIS. This has been clearly realised by many nations. As more and more municipalities adopt GIS to address local problems and facilitate the citizens they would create the right causes for eGov to take shape in a grander scale! Hence Municipal GIS is perhaps the roadmap for eGov initiatives to be actually a reality of the days to come.  Editor
