EDITORIAL

Photoshopping now comes with new and better basket of tools – the geo-spatial kind. Adobe Photoshop with the Geographic Imager has import and export capabilities in spatial raster formats, GCP transformation, reprojection, unrestricted mosaicing of multilayered images as a few of its recently added modules. The line between ‘off-the-shelf’ photo editing software and specialised IP for GIS is fast eroding. This will bring the larger community of ‘photo-editors’ into the mainstream of geo-spatial data processing.

The burning issue of over priced geospatial data generated through tax-payers money has again been raised – In France, it’s the government auditors who have entered the fray and have recommended that data for “public good” be available free on the internet. This is similar to the public interest litigation which forced the NASA to release all data collected using ‘Federal’ funding to the US citizens which resulted in a major boost to the research and academic work done in remote sensing and allied subjects in not just the U.S. but world over. Before the availability of free to use data from ‘Google Earth’ or ‘Wikimappia’ one must not forget the free ‘GeoData’ global coverage from NASA. Today, a quite a few countries have an archive of data lying in deep freeze. Let better sense prevail.
