Spatial Divergence


Any map, and specifically a political map depicting a nation's boundaries is a geospatial perception of how the world sees you and differences in these perceptions have become a prime cause of conflict. Take the case of India's. International border- in google maps this man-made division is shown in a myriad of coloured lines and the user is expected to judiciously choose the colour that best suits his situation, which would largely be decided by his nationality, and the political leanings of the government if his country does not share the hard fought international border. The legal and political wrangles that an Indian business house is presently facing is an excellent example of this divergent geospatial perception between them and their foreign partner, best attributed to lack of geospatial sensitivity...

The other attention grabbing news last week is the intended ban on cell phones used as PNDs in Victoria, New Zealand. The ubiquitous cell phone is a symbol of convergent technologies, many of them geospatial. The issue of user safety while driving a vehicle can be certainly addressed by disallowing any PND function on the cell if out of cradle. Else, even the predicted 50% growth may stay at that...
