.NET and Enterprise GIS have come a long way in the last couple of years. The popular virtual globes brought applications of GIS onto every netizens desktop – with .NET support, today Encanvas an enterprise GIS allows us to carry and analyse geospatial information offline too. On the other hand we have systems delivering ‘Imagery on Demand’ from SANZ, with its ‘EarthWhere’ product suite. ‘What EarthWhere provides is the ability to quickly locate, track and use existing metadata to create new data sets; you can pick and choose what metadata you need (date, cloud cover, groundwater locations, etc.) in order to easily create a new, customized piece of imagery that serves your particular requirements. Additionally, ‘EarthWhere’ notifies the user when new imagery is available. In other words, the precise image that you need to work with at that moment is served up upon request, or ‘on demand’. This product has gained wide acceptance among the U.S. Northern Command.

And finally, as has been in the headlines, periodically and vehemently - the brick bats which Google Earth gets. I’m sure CTO Michael Jones is used to it by now. To raise dust, this time, was the Indian government over the much-regurgitated issue of national security and high-resolution imagery, the twist to the tale being the new issue of rights of a country to allow or disallow imaging over its ‘sovereign space’!!! The usual arguments have followed, and examples cited where ‘some’ countries have managed to blur some sensitive areas. Well the real story goes some what this way – Google Earth, some times procures imagery from the respective governments. If the data has been blurred by the governmental agencies prior to providing it to Google Earth, then selective loss of resolution will result…mystery solved. But then what do you do if the country just bans the entire web site – check http://mahmood.tv/?p=2670, funny, isn’t it?
