EDITORIAL

The Asia-Pacific countries with their burgeoning population are today being positively looked upon as a world resource for manpower. These very same countries are also some of the world’s largest consumer-product manufacturing hubs. With the improving economies in these regions, the perception of these countries as markets for consumer goods is changing. Many Asia-Pacific countries are also working towards establishing a SDI. It would be worthwhile for the architects of the SDI’s to also consider non-spatial parameters integrated into the NSDI especially the kind of data used by ‘GfK Geomarketing’ to generate the ‘Purchasing Power’ dataset for Germany. In countries with internal monitoring mechanisms, generating such datasets can be and has been quickly achieved. Calculating and declaring the ‘purchasing power’ of a country and hence the consumption potential and directly the available market, with irrefutable statistical backing is a more potent weapon for self preservation than any ‘underground nuclear test’ which the world witnessed last week with such trepidation.

Talking about ‘a level playing field’ is fashionable but who could have thought of ‘Google Earth’ becoming the ‘heavy roller’ for troubled Indian farmers. An association of farmers, protesting against the highhanded government machinery involved in land acquisition, used the high resolution satellite imageries to win a much larger and rightly deserved monetary compensation for their farmlands from the government by proving that their lands were fertile.
