EDITORIAL
To ask for ‘all info about the Himalayas’ is a tall claim – but the MountainGeo Portal gives just that. This Mountain Knowledge Hub Initiative from ICIMOD should be the base camp for any serious seeker of information about the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. The casual collector of goodies can also have his fill at http://menris.icimod.net/gallery/picgallery.php. Talking about initiatives - here’s one for all us troubled souls who find government restrictions on spatial data or in plain simple terms maps, a pain... The OpenStreet Map project is a Do-it-yourself effort now almost two years old. This Web-based project aggregates hundreds of users' personally collected GPS data into master files that trace out thousands of streets and byways, primarily around the United Kingdom says Steve Coast, the founder of the project. Lets hope others around the world pull up their socks and DO IT, though the Indian effort of ‘Mapping the Neighbourhood’ by school kids, started in 2003 is in hibernation.
After signing up for the Galileo programme, India has stalled signing the final agreement raising concerns related to the access that the satellite system would have to all geographical and tactical locations in the country. Other apprehension raised is the uncertainty over uses of the data. In a cooperative effort such as the Galileo project, ‘trust’ will be a major factor along with the pressing needs to have an alternative to the US GPS facility. The question raised here couple of weeks ago about the right of a country to allow or disallow imaging over its ‘sovereign space’ can also extended to over flights of any satellite. This debate has again reared its head as the US claimed that China used a laser to jam one of its satellites. I invite your opinion with regards to the concept of ‘sovereign space and national privacy in context with high resolution imaging’.
