Silent surges of development

This week John Hall, senior research associate at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics and Theodor W Hänsch, professor of physics at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany received the Nobel Prize for Physics. While this was big news for the physics community, the latent implications of this development are yet to spread out to the positioning technology field.

The Nobel Prize has been "for their contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy," according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. This development makes it possible to measure frequencies with an accuracy of 15 digits. Their contribution allows one to keep track of the number of oscillations of a wave over a period of time. The more oscillations that can be tracked in one second, the more precisely something can be measured.

This advancement opens an ocean of opportunities in global positioning technologies and can take its applications to unmatched heights. Hence, not very far are the days when everything can be actually ‘pinpointed’. In the words of John Hall: "It's a sea change in what's possible."  Editor

Right to Information Act comes into force in India

The path-breaking Right to Information Act, giving legal rights to people to seek information from the government, came into force in India this week, placing India among the 55 countries to have such legislation. Interestingly the Act is not clearly vocal about geographic information.

New mapping project to help better administer Tsunami aid delivery

Aid agencies involved with tsunami-recovery in Sri Lanka will soon be better able to target and administer their resources for post disaster rehabilitation, because of a new mapping project to start from the UN’s Humanitarian Information Centre (HIC) supported by aid agency World Vision.

Kenya turns to digital mapping to fight crime

The Kenya government has embarked on a multi-million shilling project to create detailed digital maps of all the major urban centres in the country, showing street locations and landmarks. The project, to be completed in the next three years, is expected to boost the government's efforts in improving security.

Micro level utility mapping for health and social infrastructure by GPS

Tapas Kumar Ghatak
Sr.Gephysicist and Sr.Consultant
UNICEF, Government of West Bengal
India

Mapping of the health infrastructure to the micro level is the ultimate requirement for successful monitoring of the health referral system and distribution of amenities. The GIS/GPS technology though so far being promoted as a tool for planning but never been taken in such a ground level real level application, both in social and physical infrastructure mapping. This paper discusses the role and utility of GPS in undertaking such surveys.

Principle of High-resolution Airborne SAR Aerial triangulation supported by sparse GCPs

Lei Pang
Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping
Jixian Zhang, Mingbo Zhang

Presently, the Western Areas Mapping Mission (WAMM) of China is executing to map the relief in mountainous of western area, where the high-resolution airborne SAR imagery has often been chosen as the irreplaceable remote sensing data resource. At the same time, the mission that how to acquire enough accuracy and quantity of ground control points (GCPs), which are difficult to be measured practically, has become an urgent demand for mapping tasks. This paper analyses the airborne SAR triangulation conditions, puts forward the corresponding mathematic models and introduces the high-resolution airborne SAR triangulation test in China.
