Positioning Systems traverse diverse avenues!

What began as Technology to assist the defence forces in the warfare has travelled a long journey. What started as use of this device in fighter aircrafts & missiles has now moved to army building artillery shell, which will be guided by GPS.

In the civilian domain, use of “Positioning Systems” has evolved and created a segment for itself, cutting across the diverse fields from use of GPS in farm equipment to farmers increasing their yield by guiding tractors to the entertainment industry with film studios put thrilling spin on GPS treasure hunts.

Police is encouraging trucking companies to install GPS in their trucks to thwart hijacking and highway robberies. GPS receivers with biological and environmental sensors are being fitted into a single lightweight package carried by the horse, will help track them down.

From scooters, cars, trucks & tractors to mobile phones to human being (parenting, monitoring civil offenders etc), we are on tagging spree. The recent news of Ublox delivering 2 millionth GPS receiver to @Road is an indicator of things to come. In few years time we will have billionth unit being shipped, brining positioning services and in some converged form GIS into the mainstream industry. Something we have been talking and dreaming for long.

The road ahead looks really exciting!  Editor

Antarctica’s crevasses to be mapped

To ensure the safety of the 25th Indian expedition team which leaves for Antarctica later this year satellite imagery will be used to identify the dangerous crevasses there. Earlier expeditions used helicopters to identify them. For the first time the Indian team will use satellite-based imagery and GIS to monitor those crevasses.

Real Time Kinematic GPS in an Urban Canyon Environment

Adeniyi Iyiade
University of Plymouth,
Plymouth,UK

As GPS measurements like other survey measurements are not devoid of errors. In Real Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning in an urban canyon environments where the GPS signals are blocked by high buildings and there are not enough satellites signals in estimating the positions of the user, computation of the antenna positioning is a major problem. The research work uses an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) as an attempt to reduce the effects of errors such as the atmospheric errors, multipath and receiver noise on GPS signals during transmission. However, some unmodelled biases still remain in the GPS observations, stochastic models were used as a quality indicator to identify and isolate such biases. The end result shows an improved coordinates solution.

Fuzzy Point Averaging of the GPS Position Components

M R Mosavi
Assistant Professor
Department of Electrical Engineering
Iran

GPS can be a powerful tool that assists researchers locates points of interest. While GPS provides an easy way to collect latitude and longitude, it is important to remember that there are errors inherent in any GPS collected point. In order to use GPS most effectively, users need to decide on a strategy for dealing with the errors. The goal of this paper is to obtain better accuracy than simple point averaging from a low cost GPS receiver. The theoretical backgrounds for better accuracy are based on the principle of averaging and fuzzy logic schemes.
