giving away data...

The announcement that the Northland Regional Council (NRC) in New Zealand is to give away geospatial data for free should add another arrow into the 'free-our-data' (UK) quiver. The latest entry on the freeourdata blog very persuasively brings out the drawbacks of charging for data. The ongoing struggle to get the locations of Royl Mail's postboxes and the hurdles faced are nothing less than hilarious, though no one is smiling. The solution to the problem - crowd sourcing...

The NRC's gesture is not mere magnanimity but reflects proper understanding of the dynamics of spatial data consumption, utilisation and application by users in their land. They believe that services like Google Earth and Google Maps has had a paradigm shift in the way their citizens understand data and hence by making all data collected using public funds (a.k.a. federal funds) free, one can expect higher returns than the profits made by merely selling the data.

Now, it is left to be seen if postboxes in NRC get geospatially listed and who gets this opportunity...

SumbandilaSat (formerly ZASAT-002), is the South African micro earth observation satellite, launched on 17 September 2009. The first part of the name, Sumbandila, is from the Venda language and means "lead the way". SumbandilaSat is part of a closely integrated South African space programme and will serve as a research tool to investigate the viability of affordable space technology. Furthermore, the data will be used to, amongst others, monitor and manage disasters such as flooding, oil spills and fires within Southern Africa.

Radar coverage extends only about 150 miles from shore, so aircraft flying over the Gulf — or any large body of water — aren't covered. As a safety precaution, controllers are required to keep 100 square miles around each plane free of other aircraft. To do this, they stagger planes leaving the continental U.S. by ten minutes, an inefficient system that dates back to World War II...

GIS on Rails
There are times we want our Rails apps to have some sort of spatial capability. Recording lat long point locations and displaying them in a google map is fine, but increasingly we want to do more.

How Business Intelligence and GIS are becoming more integrated
Most people may think of GIS simply as Google maps or the navigation system for their car, but GIS tools do a lot more than help people get from A to B.
