Earlier this month, the OGC approved four standards for sensors including the Sensor Model Language ‘SensorML’. The future will allow us to acquire images which can be best described by a term ‘ Individual Delivery / Personalised Quality (IDPQ)’. It may soon be possible to ‘book images’ just the way we presently book an air ticket, where the buyer has options of choosing the price and quality. The huge quantity of data from such ‘OGC approved’ and other sensors could be made available to the end user as a direct download using upcoming data compression algorithms like the ‘Data Miniaturization Technology’ (DMT) from WindSpring, Inc.

In an era of international cooperation, for a remote sensing satellite to be classified as a ‘spy satellite’ is if anything, amusing. If this satellite launched by JAXA for monitoring North Korea’s missile tests is just a plain optical satellite as stated, and that too with 1m resolution, should it really qualify as a ‘spy’? The entire idealogy of ‘national privacy’ is and will continue to be a much debated and argued matter especially in a world where international investments and trade are at stake.
This October, Indonesia will proudly join the elite club of ‘countries with indigenous satellite building capability’ by launching ‘Lapan-Tubsat’. This satellite will go a long way in improving disaster forecasting and mitigation through its ‘real-time picture’ capability. We wish Lapan-Tubsat a ‘Dirghayu’ (long life).

An Indefinite Delivery /Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract from US Executive Branch Federal Agencies to any data provider is a much coveted thing. MDA continues to have an IDIQ for its Radarsat 1 data. What happens when Radarsat 2 is operational and providing ‘Ground Moving Target Indication’ (GMTI) data is anyone’s guess.
