From ‘total’ to ‘rightful’ Information democracy!,

Google Earth has perhaps brought Remote Sensing into mainstream. Or is it premature to think so? However, along with happy eyes, it has also raised some eyebrows recently. Lucas Heights in Sydney is the only nuclear reactor of Australia. Not long back, the facility's operator, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) had to call on the heads of the Internet search engine Google to censor photographs of the site, warning that terrorists could use the images. The website has street level details on display. In another instance, the Ministry of Defense of Korea raised similar concerns. Satellite photos of major security facilities in Korea including Cheong Wa Dae and the bases of the U.S. Forces Korea, are posted on the Google website. The Ministry of Defense has said that the satellite photos might violate domestic security laws.

While information democracy is good and desirable, having limits or having ‘rightful democracy’ is also logical standpoint. Such situations sometimes can be tricky as there is no way to regulate such information flow with domestic laws as for any local context it is a matter of foreign website in which the pictures are taken by foreign commercial satellites. There definitely has to be an intervention somewhere before the information is put to misuse. The question is, who will initiate the intervention?  Editor

Suitable digital elevation model

Tomaž Podobnikar
Research Fellow
Institute of Anthropological and Spatial Studies
Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Ljubljana,Slovenia

Digital elevation model (DEM) is one of the most important datasets for the greater part of spatial-based studies and research. A high quality DEM could be generally used as all-purpose dataset, but unfortunately its production could be very expensive. If we know a nature of application that applies DEM and if our demands for the final result are clear, then we can adjust the DEM selection or we can simplify its production.

FEATURE OF THE WEEK

Can GIS save the endangered wildlife?
Man has been dominating the world with his technological achievements through the ages. In fact his acts have often been selfish resulting in damages to the natural world. Wildlife has often borne the brunt of man’s actions and many wildlife species have become extinct as well as endangered. Today man is slowly waking up to his folly realizing the imbalance triggered off in the ecosystem and have begun to use his technological knowledge towards conservation activities. Several instances are observed in different parts of the globe where GIS is being applied to enhance and facilitate wildlife conservation activities.
