Park Management in Ghana Using
GIS and Remote Sensing Technology
Dr. Twumasi has written a fascinating study of deforestation in
the country of Ghana and the ways that technologies of geographic
information systems (GIS) and remote sensing can be used to monitor
its forest.
This book has been beautifully structured by locating the conversation
within the global context against the backdrop of a review of the
literature on the subject. In the first chapter the author looks
at the causes of and extent of deforestation around the world and
the ways forest degradation can be monitored. The second chapter
turns to an examination of different kinds of parks and park management
in both developed and developing countries.
The third chapter introduces GIS and remote sensing technologies
and the many ways they can be utilized in park management. Problems
specific to developing countries are examined in relation to these.
The fourth chapter turns to the country Ghana, providing a general
overview of the country, its parks and reserves, problems of deforestation,
and monitoring technologies.
This chapter sets the basis for chapters five through ten, which
examine two national parks in Ghana - the Kakum National Park and
the Digya National Park - and describe how GIS and remote sensing
could assist in the development of databases, park management,
planning for the future, and more. This study concludes with 12
appendices, a thorough bibliography and index.
The book has been introduced by a good commendatory preface by
Dr. Tommy Coleman, who speaks highly of the author and the many
contributions to scholarship he has made. Twumasi's work has been
beautifully written and formatted and cogently argued.
