Workshop on "GIS based water resource management"

GIS@development

May - June 1999

Workshop on "GIS based Water resource management"

A workshop on "GIS based water resource management system" was organised by the Civil Engineering Department, IIT Delhi from 27th April, 99 to 1st May, 99. Sponsored by NRDMS, Department of Science and Technology, the workshop was conducted to introduce GIS for watershed management. For this purpose experienced users were identified and invited to participate in the workshop and the primary audience’ were nominees from State NRDMS centers, State government district level officials, academic institutions and NGOs like NIH, CAZRI, NGRI, CGWB, RRL Bhopal, IIT Bombay, CWRDM Calicut.

The focus of the workshop was to broach the usefulness of GIS for watershed management and to bring about a change in the outlook by introducing the concept of watersheds as the primary unit of planning in all the future efforts. The discussions aimed to share the know-how available with the end users in terms of in-house developed software and data sets.

The end-users were exposed to the idea of GIS, its scope, representational dichotomy within GIS in the form of Raster and Vector GIS and the advantages of these concepts in watershed management. Also, creation of Digital Elevation Model, hydrologic functions on DEM’s, methodology for watershed characterization using GIS, use of ArcView in watershed delineation etc were discussed. Databases and database management systems were covered as a key topic with special reference to spatial objects and database models. The geo-referencing concepts and their implementation in ArcView were also discussed.

A demonstration of ArcView-SWAT and a thorough exposure to the data requirements was given to the attendees which covered Hydrological Modeling with special reference to SWAT and Non spatial data preparation and identification of additional Water Resources applications (users’ requirements). Spatial data preparation for SWAT (Land-use/Soil) and the salient SWAT outputs and scenario generation capabilities were also discussed.

Effort was made to make the users aware of the latest trends and technologies, and the kind of scheduling ensured that learning was modulated and rectified at each stage of deficiency.
