The city, where surveying and map making was initiated in India has finally been captured on paper with the Eicher Chennai City Map. The overwhelming response to the Delhi Map encouraged Eicher to create a similar map of Chennai city. The map covers 600 sq. km and provides information on fringe areas such as Puzhal, Old Perungalathur and Mangadu and the newly developed areas and suburbs around the city and the adjoining areas of Tambaram, Ambattur and Ennore.
The map aims to caters to all sections of users, whether it is a tourist visiting the city for the first time and finding his way around the city; or a long standing resident trying to locate his own house on the map. Apart from providing detailed information of the city it highlights important landmarks, important commercial centers and main arterial road network of the city.
Prepared with the help of digital cartography, the 208-page book contains 128 maps and four key-to-map pages together with a folded route planner. It has information on the width of the road and also the roads can be scaled. Being second in succession of such maps, the Chennai map takes advantage of the lessons learnt from the Delhi map-experience. Although the Chennai map is based on a similar format it provides more detailed information on public utility areas than the Delhi Eicher. In order to increase user friendliness, each map leaf contains the name and the pin code of the area shown on it. Wherever possible the book provides grids numbers of common places shown on that specific page. The areas that form the heart of Chennai city and are active business centers such as George Town, Chennai Central, Kondithope, Anna Salai etc, have been dealt with in greater detail of a grid of 250X250 m.These areas have also been distinctly colour coded for easy identification. The entire map contains minute details such as individual house numbers in some cases, interior road networks and covers 39 categories including educational institutions, restaurants, banks, roads, parks, markets and industries with 14,700 index items. The Chennai map has added symbols and listing of banquet halls, blood banks, ATMs, heritage buildings, pin codes, locality index and listing of cremation and burial grounds.
The Eicher City Map of Chennai, is designed for high information content and user friendly format. The map is prepared using Indian Satellite IRS-1C for the digital imagery of the ‘shy’ (meaning that the cloudy skies usually prevent the satellite to get the clear image) Chennai City. Priced at Rs 200, the City Map are available at all leading bookstores, general stores, petrol pumps, railway stations and airports in Chennai.
The book contains a comprehensive legend, list of abbreviations and easily identifiable symbols which makes the map more user friendly. It also includes an introduction on how to use the book, a brief history of Chennai city, places of entertainment and excursions, food and shopping areas and how to travel in and around Chennai. These features add value and serve the purpose of a comprehensive travel guide of Chennai to the outsider.
