“India belongs to the ‘top 5 market’ category for us. In the coming times we do see a greater symbiotic relationship coming up between us and the Indian GIS market. We have a fantastic partner in ERDAS for Lieca Geosystems. They have improved our potential...”

Leica Geosystems, a globally active positioning and geomatics technology company with a range of solutions in capturing, visualizing and modeling spatial data world-wide organized a two day seminar under the aegis of 'GIS & Mapping User Meet' on 3rd - 4th September in New Delhi. Pegged as 'one great meeting of the minds' the conference included workshops and focus groups.

In the opening keynote address, Surveyor General of India, Dr. Prithvish Nag, called upon the private and public organisations to strengthen Survey of India (SoI) through partnership. The idea was welcomed by all the participants.

Making use of the opportunity Leica Geosystems showcased its latest products which included Leica Photogrammetry Suite (LPS), Geographic Imaging and 3D visualization, Leica Geosystems Airborne Data Capture Sensors, IRS 1C SAC Sensor Model for ERDAS IMAGINE.

Mr. Richard Mackay, Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Leica Geosystems and Mr. James M. Durana, Director ERDAS India Pvt Ltd shared their ideas with GIS Development.

How do you rate the gathering at the seminar?
The attendees at the seminar included enthusiastic technology oriented and interested groups. Though they belonged to different sectors their interest towards GIS is truly commendable. Such an enormous gathering at the seminar reflects the promising future potential of geospatial market in India.

Do seminars like this help push a company's ideology and objectives?
Seminars of such nature are part of our long term investment. The company's immediate gains may be through selling of geospatial products, but seminars of such scale can start broadcasting our efforts to a larger public.

Any particular presentation from the meet that spells future for Leica Geosystems?
The keynote address by the Surveyor General of India Dr. Prithvish Nag reflected the interest of SoI in adopting future technologies for the mapping industry. His call for public-private partnership reflects his anxiousness to welcome newer technologies. Infrastructure development and growth of all sectors require spatial data. In such a scenario agencies must work on making spatial data available in public domain.

How do you plan to take forward this seminar?
We plan to make this seminar an annual event in India. We are also aiming at supplying trainers and proffessionals who can do the follow up for the querying companies.

How do you perceive the Indian GIS market?
India belongs to the top 5 market category for us. In the coming times we do see a greater symbiotic relationship coming up between us and the Indian GIS market. We have a fantastic partner in ERDAS for Lieca Geosystems. They have improved the potential of our company in India. We have made India as our product base and would expect ERDAS India to generate more India-specific products.

What is the future vision of your company?
We have a vision that in future either Intellegent Images would be used or base maps would be based on them. This is what we have to work for.
