Please tell us about the vision and objectives of ISPRS?
International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) is a non-governmental international organisation, devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of knowledge, research, development, education and training in the photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences (SIS), their integration and applications, and the sustainability of the environment. The areas of interest of ISPRS have evolved significantly since it was established as the International Society of Photogrammetry (ISP) in 1910. Its key objectives are to:
  • facilitate excellence in research and development and the proper use of appropriate technology in the photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences ninitiate and coordinate research in the related fields
  • international congresses, symposia and meetings
  • of The International Archives of the Photogra-mmetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
  • and circulate an international journal, a bulletin, and other communications relevant to the interest of the society and the community at large
  • stimulate the formation of national and regional Societies of the photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences; through recognition and awards
  • encourage interaction of the society with the community and promote education, training, and technology
Would you like to list some of the few achievements of ISPRS?
Since its inception in 1910, ISPRS has been very effective in facilitating cooperation, sharing of ideas and concepts, and encouraging research by individuals with expertise in the areas of ISPRS. In the past, this has led to the development in the field of photogrammetry, and it should continue to result in new innovations in the photogrammetry, remote sensing and SIS. The organisational structure of ISPRS is conducive to encouraging cooperation between individuals in the more than 100 member organisation. The currently seven Technical Commissions and their approximately 50 Working Groups undertake the scientific work of ISPRS. The enthusiasm of participants in the Technical Commission is a significant characteristic of the activities within ISPRS, and this has been a contributing factor in its success. The terms of reference of the Technical Commissions have been redefined for the future, so that there are two Commissions assigned to each of the areas. The ISPRS Congress, Symposia and Workshops are significant events in the ISPRS calendar. The Congress is held every fours years, bringing together about 3,000 people. A notable feature of the Congresses is a commercial exhibition. The 20th ISPRS Congress will be held in Istanbul, Turkey in July 2004. ISPRS has been recognized for its expertise and quality of its work by becoming a Union member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). This enables ISPRS to work closely with scientists in projects.

Does ISPRS visualise any collaboration with other international organisation in similar field to benefit geomatics community in general?
ISPRS will collaborate with the above organisations when appropriate. There are a number of international organisations covering the fields with which ISPRS is associated, and ISPRS has limited capability to collaborate with all of them. The collaboration should occur when it is consistent with the objectives of ISPRS listed above. ISPRS already collaborates with ICA, through several ISPRS working groups.

What are the future plans of ISPRS?
  • The redefinition of the Technical Commissions with new terms of reference should have a significant impact on the development of the R&D activities
  • ISPRS plans to input significant ISPRS funds into scientific initiatives, that will encourage greater collaboration
  • The establishment of the ISPRS Foundation is intended to attract funds for philanthropic activities, that will provide grants. It will lead to a major injection of funds for ISPRS international activities.
  • Development of the recently launched ISPRS Book Series for the publication of regular books
  • Increase the level of collaboration with environmental scientists for sustainable development

International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing
The ISPRS is a non-governmental organization devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry, remote sensing and their applications. All scientific and technical work of ISPRS is accomplished by 7 Technical Commissions.
