3D laser scanning survey at Ta Prohm temple

Problems encountered during scanning
It was very difficult to position the scanner as the roots of the trees invaded most of the structures and the visibility of the actual structure was very less. In fact at some of the places the roots are holding the structures. Most of the structures are in vulnerable conditions, which is very difficult to access physically. At some of the places the scanner was set-up on the fallen members due to unavailability of scan locations. With tourists all over the place it was very difficult to scan some of the key locations like the causeway, main entrance and western gopura.

Project Results
Significant results have been achieved from the scan data. The entire site was scanned in 15 days with an accuracy of 6 mm. The point cloud was used to prepare the following deliverables:
  • 2D Drawings in AutoCAD
  • 3D Models of the existing structures
  • Sectional drawings
  • Virtual walk through of the temple complex
  • Registered point cloud data in digital format
A presentation on the project has been given to the International Symposium of ICC on Ta Prohm at Siem Reap, Cambodia. IIT Chennai and WAPCOS are also involved in this project.
