Abstract

Planning for disaster preparedness can be defined as ‘measures, which enables governments, organizations, communities and individuals to respond rapidly and effectively to a disaster situation’. The assessment of vulnerability in any settlement mainly involves the density, quality of materials used, location and other preventive measures. This study is an attempt to develop vulnerability index for different types of development in Dehra Dun. Parameters used to develop the index mainly include population density, age of buildings, construction quality and topography of areas. This index shows highest vulnerability in informal settlements. Today, the rapid growth of these settlements has become a critical issue. Thus, role of new technology including remote sensing and GIS becomes very important for monitoring of haphazard growth and disaster preparedness plan.
