The Application Perspective
The second plenary session put forth the
application perspective of finding mainstream
leading to an interesting and informative
discussion. The discussions revolved
round the integration of business strategy to
incorporate GIS and IT solutions consistently
across an enterprises enabling informed
decision making rather than scattered infor-
mation. The session was chaired by Dr N
Vijayaditya, Director General, National Informatics
Centre. The first speaker of the session
was B V R Mohan Reddy, Founder,
Chairman of Infotech Enterprise. According
to him, GIS should become an integral part of
the total IT plan of an organisation. Joe
Astroth, Executive Vice president, Autodesk
Location Services added an unique flavour to
the session by expressing in Hindi his happiness
to be back in India. Mr Astroth mentioned
that GIS is getting off the back offices
and desktop and slowly reaching the hands
of the common man.Bhupinder Singh, Managing
director, Bentley South Asia, focused
on the integration of GIS in fields like infrastructure,
faster response to natural disasters,
national security, Real time Business
Demands, etc. The session concluded with a
presentation by Mr Mike McGill, Director of
International Commercial Sales, Digital
Globe. He highlighted the present challenge
for the mapping community where there is a
continous growing demand for mapping
applications from end users which is not
matched with an equally growing budget
allocated for the same. The Chairperson Dr
N Vijayaditya, shared his views at the end
where he elaborated on the actual implementation
of the technolgy to increase the
application for all areas of the country especially
the rural areas.

Keynote Sessions
Enterprise GIS
This keynote session was chaired by Dr. P
Nag, Director, NATMO, India. The session
had four speakers- Mr Rajesh Kalra, Executive
Vice President, RMSI, who spoke on the
conventional and emerging usage of GIS, Mr
Rajesh Mathur, President, ESRI India spoke
about the challenges and opportunities in
‘Enterprise GIS’, Mr Jim Farley, Vice President,
Leica Geosystems, Geospatial Imaging,
summarised how imageries are intelligent
and cost effective tools to maintain and
update corporate spatial databases. The last
speaker, Mr Vikram D. Apte, Principal Executive
Officer, New Delhi Power Limited
(NDPL), India opined that GIS usage
becomes ornamental in the absence of
updated data.
Technology Trends
The second keynote session was chaired by
Commodore S K Jha, NHO, Indian Navy. The
speakers in this session were Mr Ronald
Bisio, Director Marketing, Trimble, Mr Joan
Perez Pericot, Marketing Manager, HP, Dr
Ravi Gupta, Editor-in-Chief, GIS Development
and Mr Joseph Arokiadas, Head,
NRSA Data Centre. The session had a discussion
on the existing and emerging
geospatial technology trends.
Training Programme
A two days pre-conference training programme
was organized by GIS Institute. The
training programme was attended by fifteen
attendees from government, private and academia.
Some of the organizations represented
were from DIPAC, New Delhi, DRDO/
ISSA, New Delhi, De Beers India Ltd., Mumbai,
Rites India Ltd, Gurgaon, National Institute
of Smart Governance, Hyderabad,
MANIT, Bhopal, Dept of Town Planning and
Bangalore Municipality, Bangalore.
Other Highlights
The other highlights of the conference
were Seminar/Tracks, Workshop, Poster,
Session, Technical and Student Session,
Dinner Receptions and User Meets. There
were 12 Technical Sessions, 3 tracks/seminars
namely, Energy, Transportation and g-
Enabled Business Processes, 3 dinner
receptions- Digital Globe, Canadian and
Leica Geosystems.
Exhibition
The exhibition was spread over 1800 sq mts
with over 30 exhibitors from across the globe
showcasing and displaying products, services
and solutions. It also presented 3 best
exhibitor awards based on participants’ feedback
which went to – Rolta India, ESRI and
Bentley
