    ESRI's ArcInfo Vesion 8
    Autodesk acquires Vision Solutions
    MapInfo Professional 5.5 Launched

    HP-Design Jets

    Printers for geographic data
Hewlett-PackardIndia has added a new dimension to data by introducing HP Design Jets, the format printers which allow easy and cost effective distribution, presentation and consolidation of GIS data that was earlier not possible. A lot of large format printouts rely on line accuracy to depict variations in geographics and data plotting on the map and a wrong line width will convey a totally different message to the end user. According to Puneet Chadha, Market Development Manager of HP, "HP Design Jets can do auto-colour calibration, are fault tolerant, offer the Jet Express Technology that translates to incredible output speeds, humidity and temperature sensors and are capable of handling raster images."

    ESRI’s ArcInfo Version 8

    Adopts VBA Standard
In February, ESRI released ArcInfo Version 8 and Spatial Database Engine (SDE) Version 4 as beta software. ArcInfo Version 8 and SDE Version 4 are the first software products built from ESRI’s next generation ArcGIS component-based GIS technology. Both software products continue to operate independently, but at version 8, they are also integrated. This integration claims to offer unparalleled capability, scalability, and usability for implementing GIS in organizations. The aspect of ArcInfo Version 8 that will be most widely appreciated is the thoroughly modern menu-driven user interface. The ArcInfo Version 8 Graphical User Interface (GUI) follows the latest Windows standards and makes extensive use of wizards for frequently performed tasks.

ESRI has licensed Microsoft’s Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) for use in all of ESRI’s software product offerings. Visual Basic will become the standard customization tool across ESRI’s product line.
