    Geomatics centre in Delhi

    A proposal from SOI
    The Survey of India (SOI) has proposed a Geomatics Centre in Delhi to offer consultancy services on geophysical, topographical and geodetic surveys to the Government and to private organisations as per reports published in Hindu (September 14th, 1999). The proposal has already been forwarded to the Ministry of Science and Technology last year. According to the Additional Surveyor-General, Brig. R. N. Shrivastava, the centre is supposed to co-ordinate specialised survey projects at the national level such as watershed development, coastal zone management and conservation of the Himalayan ecosystem using SOI resources. The project is under process.





    TERI plans for Digital Elevation Model

    GIS scientists’ plan to develop TIN
    The Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) plans to initiate work on the digital elevation model (DEM) at Korba, Madhya Pradesh to assess the concentration of various air pollutants in and around the Korba mining area. It will also assess the changing environmental scenario in the mining areas of Goa, the Yamuna sub-basin spanning across five northern States and the Shivaliks in Haryana. The technology has been proved to be a boon to the scientists in respect of its ability of presenting complex data in easy-to-comprehend visual forms for the decision makers. The scientists plan to develop "Triangulated Irregular Network"(TIN) to prepare three-dimensional model maps.





    Infotech Enterprise

    Gets fast track award, acquires cartographic sciences
    Infotech Enterprises Ltd., after the completion of a GIS project for Bharti Telenet Ltd., Bhopal in five months has earned the Fast Track Award from SmallWorld Systems Pvt. Ltd.,UK. Infotech has implemented the turnkey GIS solution that gives Bharti a competitive edge in the areas of marketing, planning, customer care, operations and maintenance.

    The solution has resulted the delivery of high resolution digital maps for Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, Infotech Enterprises has completed all the formalities to acquire all of the outstanding common stock of Cartographic Sciences, a fully-owned Indian subsidiary of the US-based Analytical Surveys Inc. (ASI). Infotech Enterprises provides a wide range of software and services for digitisation, CAD/GIS applications development, enterprises software and internet solutions. ASI and Infotech have finalised and signed the technical services agreement wherein ASI guarantees to provide Infotech a minimum of Rs. 142 crores of work in the form of data conversion, programming and photographic compilation services over a five year period beginning in October 1999.





    SGS Infotech Pvt. Ltd.

    Catering to the GIS
    SGS Infotech Pvt. Ltd. has set up a modern data digitising, conversion and processing facility primarily for catering to the GIS segment. The company is geared to convert many different types of data, including digitisation of maps, architectural, civil and mechanical drawings, CAD/CAM/GIS solution, GIS Databases etc. using AutoCAD Map, MapInfo Professional, CadOverlay Softwares. The production facility is located at Udyog Vihar, Phase-V, Gurgaon and the project has been promoted by SGS Tekniks Pvt. Ltd.




    Autodesk's world 2.5

    Autodesk has released the enhanced version of GIS——World 2.5. The enhancements include: full read/write support for AutoCAD 2000 and Map 2000; the same Co-ordinate System Definition Tool now being used in AutoCAD Map 2000; and the ability to export vector format data (and related attributes) directly to Autodesk’s Mapguide R4. The new version of World can access Arc/Info, and ArcView, MapInfo, Intergraph and other popular vector files in native formats. Any format not immediately supported can be added as a DLL.





    CompassCom Maps Teller county with GPS

    To aid in tracing cellular calls
    Under a contract awarded by the El Paso-Teller County (Colorado) E911 service, CompassCom Inc. of Englewood, Colorado, has digitally mapped 788 miles of roads in Teller County using GPS technology. The new digital road map will enable the E911 organisation to identify the precise locations of emergency 911 calls placed from cellular telephones throughout the county.     ArcView GIS 3.2 ships in the US

    ESRI’s latest software IMS announced
    ESRI, the leading GIS software company, has announced that the new update of the company’s popular desktop mapping, ArcView GIS 3.2, is now shipping. Some of the major areas of enhancement in this software include general performance enhancements, shapefile projection utility, updated data access version 2.0, updated report writer extension-Seagate Crystal Reports Version 7.0, new data integration utilities, new sample utilities and extensions, new and updated ESRI data and maps (total of five CDs).

    Lansat products

    Prices Slashed
    Australian Centre for Remote Sensing has reduced the prices of Landsat products between 60% and 80%. Apart from rationalising its product options, it has also freed up its licensing conditions allowing users to freely copy and distribute data without paying any royalty, thereby opening up the use of Landsat imagery to Australian industry.
