Automatic vehicle location system has recently been launched by GROUPCOM, the public mobile radio trunking services from Arya Communications and Electronics Services Ltd. It is based on GPS and radio trunking technologies. This system is essential for efficient fleet management, security applications etc. The requirement of automatic vehicle location system has been steadily increasing in India for use by taxi fleet operations, trunking companies, city transportation organisations, security vans, ambulances, police and security, etc.

A Japanese mobile communication giant NTT Docomo launched a small electronic gadget "Doco?", meaning "where?", which points out the holder’s position on a digital map through the mobile phone network. The NTT Docomo developed the Doco for children, aged persons and pets who lose their way home.

Europe gears to challenge US military GPS
European Space Agency is planning to develop a space-based location system to rival the US military GPS and to allow the European nations to compete with US on a level playing field. It is expected to be operational by 2006, and the industry estimates put developing market opportunities for positioning systems at around $50 billion per annum by 2010.

New release by Leica
GS50 data collection system is the new release of Leica Geosystems.It includes a palm computer with a QWERTY keyboard and a large LCD display, a GPS, and a new software package for gathering and editing geographical data. The user interface is menu-driven, and guides the operator step-by-step through the process of recording attributes and position. If it is equipped with its real-time kinematic GPS engine, then the unit will append position to this data with accuracy up to 1 cm. With the optional Leica Disto laser rangefinder interface, position offsets can be occupied, such as the middle of a stream. Field data can be transferred to the office through a serial link. The unit can be equipped with 85 Mbytes of memory.

Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) introduced the GeoExplorer 3 data collection and maintenance system, the industry’s most technologically advanced handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) for Geographical Information System (GIS) applications. The system’s new design and cable-free real-time mapping capabilities, make the GeoExplorer 3 system the ideal productivity tool for creating and maintaining utility, urban and natural resource databases.
The newly designed GIS data collection and maintenance system gives users the ability to increase productivity through its advanced features in the field or back at the office. The GeoExplorer 3 system is small, lightweight and water-resistance. Its intuitive graphical map and navigation display allows the user to see their current location, plan activities efficiently and relocate existing features. An integrated digital compass gives accurate bearing and distance to keep the user on track, even while stationary. Field data collected by the GeoExplorer 3 system can be downloaded to Trimble’s GPS Pathfinder Office software for simple processing.
With Trimble’s Bean-on-a-Belt, or BoB differential correction receiver, the GeoExplorer 3 system becomes a precise differential GPS (DGPS) tool for real-time mapping and maintenance of GIS data without the need for postprocessing. Users can upload features from the GIS to the GeoExplorer 3 system to relocate, verify and update positions and attributes in the field. GPS clock reset
A timing problem hit the GPS of the US Department of Defence - a constellation of 24 satellites used worldwide in time keeping, surveying, navigation, geophysical exploration and geodesy at around midnight GMT on August 21-22. The network of navigational satellites known as GPS, sailed through a critical transition as its clock was reset at zero, a long scheduled event with the potential to disrupt a wide range of military, business and consumer uses. With this 27 satellites in orbit about 11,000 miles (17,700 kms) above the Earth, handled the rollback successfully.
