Draft Convergence Bill To Be Completed Soon by INDIA
India hopes to pass a new convergence in the next six to seven months bill aimed at providing a clear regulatory framework for telecommunications companies given the convergence of telecom, Internet and broadcasting services worldwide over the last few years, said Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan.
"We have given the final shape to the convergence bill. We need just one more sitting to incorporate the changes made by various ministries," union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said. The group of ministers on convergence will meet again on December 21 to approve the final draft of the bill, he said.
The new legislation, along the lines of an amendment to the U.S. telecommunications law in 1996 and Malaysia's Multimedia Act in 1998, addresses concerns emerging out of the convergence of telephony, the Internet and media using digital technologies.
