GDR Software Ltd. in $23mn GIS deal with AT&T
Bangalore based GDR Software has struck a $23 million business deal
(about RS 110 crore) in the Geographical Information System (GIS)
with telecommunication giant AT&T and a top digital mapping
company in US. GDR's COO for US operations T. V. Krishna and its
marketing director N. Shankar told that they are undertaking
a $6.8 million geomapping project for AT&T. It involves country
outlines to be broken first into state outlines, followed by district
outlines and so on to superimpose AT&T's telecom network.
The other project, which is pegged at $12.6 to $16.2 million,
is for one of the largest digital charting and mapping companies
in the world. The three year GIS exercise is targeted at both land
and ocean terrain. The US Company is undertaking major GIS works for
the US navy. The GDR is now talking to an American insurance company,
Cadcorp for some GIS projects. The insurance major is looking to
mapflood zones, forest fire prone areas, statistically populate these
sectors plan out its business strategies and products.
Krishna revealed that to exploit the potential of the GIS market in
the US, apart from other web base technology business, GDR is setting
up an onsite consulting team along with backoffice experts in US.The
company proposes to ramp up employee numbers to about 50 for this
programme. Incidentally, GDR has set up a competency centre for
leading Australian GIS major Spatial Info way in Bangalore. IT is
also partnering the company in bids for Singapore Telecom Projects.
In view of the growing business prospects, GDR plans to rise about
$2 million sometime next year from financial institutions. GDR is also doing two GIS pilot projects for Karnataka
Power Transmission Corporation and Bangalore Telecom.
