India's first GIS based infrastructure
Jalpiguri district and Assam Gas Company Limited (GAIL) has implemented GIS based infrastructure. This is for the first time that any public utility service company in India has launched a full-fledged GIS system to monitor, manage and plan its operations. With the help of this infrastructure the district authorities will be able to retrieve an array of information on their computer screen regarding physical, socio-economic,and demographic aspects of the districts. Initially the district administration will have access to the digitised data base at the block level but within the next three months the entire village level data base will be available. Assam Gas Company implemented its own GIS network at Duliajan grid . Efforts are on to bring seven more grids and the entire gas distribution network in the eastern region under the GIS umbrella, involving ONGC Limited and GAIL. Assam Gas is looking at a joint venture with RMS (Riddhi Management Services Pvt. Limited), for setting up a comprehensive distribution network which can be monitored using computrs and GIS tools.
The GIS, earlier restricted to the defence and few exclusive areas, uses vectorisation techniques to simulate and depict real life scenarios and surroundings using satellite images, topography charts and maps, which are then used in conjunction with other databases to form what is know as attributed data.
This enables entire blueprints, maps and project plans to be digitised and stored in computers as graphic-rich data.
