India is ready for satellite data sharing : ISRO
ISRO Chairman Dr. K. Kasturirangan said that India is prepared to share its satellite data with neighbouring countries to facilitate research and decision making for integrated disaster management or other humanistic purposes.
India is one of the countries that has developed advance satellite use expertise for improving communication network.
Scientists working with International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, said that India has a very rigid satellite data sharing policy. We are asking India to change its data policy, as the traditional security concerns related to strategic topographic maps are no longer valid in the existing improved satellite imaging technology.
Kasturirangan, however avoided further questions on strategic issues and military applications of the space-knowledge systems.
"Our space programmes are application-driven,"the super scientistsaid, which aimed at self-reliance in supporting the country'frontier research goals.
He was speaking to the reporters in Shillong during his visit to setting up of North Eastern Space Application Center. This Application Centre at Umroi, near Shillong, would be fully operational by 2002. First of its kind in the north-east, it would play an important role in the developmental process of the region, helping through its satellite images research in the fields of agriculture, horticulture and floriculture.
