Mapping of Jakarta by IKONOS satellite imagery
PT. Blom Nusantara based in Jakarta, Indonesia is currently mapping a majority (1,800 sq. km.) of the Jakarta metropolitan area using IKONOS 1-meter panchromatic imagery.
Although large scale street maps exist for many parts of the area, they are segmented, usually only available as paper maps, out-of-date and in a local coordinate system/datum. For this reason, Blom proposed the creation of new, comprehensive and accurate street maps derived from Space Imaging’s IKONOS satellite imagery, the highest resolution imagery ever commercially available.
Two clients fund the project. The first client is Broadband Multimedia (Kabelvision), based in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali, are using the maps for the design of their H.F.C. (Cable TV) network. The second client is a JICA funded transportation planning project. The project began in mid August 2000 and will be completed by the end of December 2000.
Blom Nusantara has setup a production facility staffed by 42 technicians divided over two shifts. Approximately one third of the area was covered by recently acquired imagery stored in Space Imaging’s archives. Space Imaging programmed the satellite to acquire the remaining two thirds. Using readily available archive imagery, the production process was able to begin without delay. The remaining imagery was successfully acquired and delivered before the initial one third was digitized.
The process:
The imagery is first rectified, enhanced and mosaiced in ER Mapper, using hundreds of ground control points. Once rectified, the imagery is viewed in MapInfo Professional in its correct geographic position, using an ER Mapper plug-in. Features are mapped through on-screen digitizing and are given attributes. The features include street centerlines and outlines, building footprints, water features, railroads, and housing classifications. In hilly areas, the imagery is further orthorectified using PCI’s Ortho Engine IKONOS Module and a DEM (Digital Elevation Model). The map has an absolute positional accuracy of better than 10 meters.
This is the largest and first project of its kind in Asia. Having a comprehensive and accurate large scale street map of the Jakarta area will allow for many GIS applications not possible before. Early in 2001, this GIS-ready map will be available exclusively through Blom Nusantara. Blom currently has plans to continue mapping other major cities in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia.
