NEW contract for Leica to Supply Integrated GPS/GIS And Laser Rangefinding Systems For Nebraska

The contract was awarded to Leica by the Tri-Basin Natural Resources District in Holdrege, Nebraska. Leica will supply six GS50 handheld GPS/GIS data acquisition units interfaced with long-range Laser Locators. The integrated systems will be used to measure the exact location of over 30,000 water wells throughout the state using remote observations. The unique system makes it possible to map objects up to four kilometers away without leaving the vehicle.

The GS50 consists of a portable GPS satellite receiver and a palm-top computer with full QWERTY keyboard and large daylight-readable LCD display. The GPS receiver incorporates Leica's patented ClearTrak(tm) GPS technology for precise satellite code measurements. The GS50 package also includes Leica's GIS DataPRO(tm) Office Software for processing and editing GIS data.

Leica's Laser Locator is a unique instrument designed for long-range distance measurements from 10 to 4,000 meters. The high-precision 7x42 binoculars, with built-in laser rangefinder, digital compass and inclinometer, permit the collection of data, such as distances, heights and elevation angles. Data from the Laser Locator flows to the GS50 via a serial data link.

With the Leica system, the user can drive to a site, determine his current GPS position with the GS50 and then measure the distance to the target object with the Laser Locator. Repeating the process at a second observation point yields an exact position for the remote object. Since the laser range measurements are unaffected by surrounding ferrous metals, the data can be gathered without leaving the vehicle.

Based in Torrance, California, the GPS Business Area of Leica Geosystems Inc. designs, manufactures and markets professional products using the Global Positioning System (GPS) for a broad range of survey, mapping, navigation, positioning, machine control and other applications.

Leica Geosystems, with worldwide headquarters in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, has a more than 100-year heritage as one of the leading instrument and system innovators in surveying, industrial measurement and navigation. Leica is a worldwide registered trademark that stands for quality and service.
