Leica's GS50 GPS/GIS data collection system for Washington Department Of Transportation
The Washington Department of Transportation (DOT) has selected Leica Geosystems as the preferred manufacturer of GPS/GIS equipment.
The Washington DOT decision in favor of Leica's GS50 GPS/GIS data collection system was made following a competitive analysis of products from six manufacturers. The evaluations included extensive benchmark GPS tests and product demonstrations.
The Washington DOT selection is expected to translate into significant product orders from the State of Washington over the next several years, according to Stig Pedersen, GPS/GIS business director for Leica.
Pedersen noted that one reason for the Washington DOT selection of Leica was the solid reputation and support from Leica's GIS dealer, Kuker-Ranken, Inc., of Mountlake.
The GS50, introduced by Leica in 1999, is a powerful GPS/GIS package of hardware and software designed to streamline collecting and editing geospatial data. The GS50 package consists of a GPS receiver with backpack antenna and palm computer for field data collection, and Leica's GIS DataPRO(tm) Office Software. The GS50 GPS receiver is based on the highly successful System 500 series survey systems and uses Leica's patented ClearTrak GPS technology for precise satellite measurements. The DataPRO(tm) software package uses the ESRI Shapefile as its native format and also supports other popular GIS data formats.
Based in Torrance, California, the GPS Business Area of Leica Geosystems Inc. designs, manufactures and markets professional products using the Global Positioning System (GPS) for a broad range of survey, mapping, navigation, positioning, machine control and other applications.
Leica Geosystems, with worldwide headquarters in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, has a more than 100-year heritage as one of the leading instrument and system innovators in surveying, industrial measurement and navigation. Leica is a worldwide registered trademark that stands for quality and service.
