New Batch of Export & Seamless USGS Topo Maps by Maptech

Maptech (Greenland, NH) releases Terrain Professional (version 4.05) with new batch export and seamless map options. Batch export allows for multiple map images to be exported at one time with user-defined projections and datums. This enhanced functionality makes exporting maps easier and quicker. The seamless option allows the user to scroll seamlessly from map to map or view individual maps, complete with collar information.

Teresa Steenbeke from Maptech says, “Terrain Professional offers export flexibility that is unmatched with other products on the market. Export options include from datum, projection, or coordinate system as well as a variety of georeferenced tiff formats.”

Maptech has over 35 states completed and is releasing one to two states a month and plans to have the entire country completed in 2000.

Maptech takes actual paper USGS topo maps, scans each one individually, and presents the maps on CD, in clear 160-dpi raster images. Each map undergoes a series of quality checks before being placed on CD, preserving all map details from the paper original. Each CD can contain up to 300 contiguous maps for a specific area of a state. Two map scales, 1:24,000/25,000 and 1:100,000, are included on each CD. In addition the entire country is available in 1:250,000 scale and is sold separately.

Terrain Professional allows you to customize quads by assigning your own specifications for scale, map datum and projection method. In this way, you can match your topo base map to your data layers, to ensure that all map features are properly aligned. Whether you need an entire quad or just a portion, you can get map coverage in whatever projection, datum, or state plane coordinate system you require. The customized map images can be saved in a variety of georeferenced TIF file formats, including TAB, TFW and GEOTIFF.

The user can specify NAD 27, NAD 83 or WGS 84 datum. Various projection methods, including Transverse Mercator, Lambert Conformal Conic, UTM, and state plane coordinate systems are supported. NGS (National Geodetic Survey) provides users with benchmarks and control points. The data sheets can be viewed, printed or exported as text files.

System requirements: Windows 95, 98 or NT; Pentium Processor; CD-ROM; 32 MB RAM; 8 MB of hard disk space; mouse or drawing equivalent. Price per CD: $295 to $975 with special pricing for multiple CDs. Networking site licenses available: up to10 stations for $775 to $2,475. A complete product listing with downloadable demos is available at www.maptech.com or call 1-800-627-7236. Maptech is a leader in digital mapping in land, marine and aeronautical products.
