Task Force on National Geospatial Data Infrastructure for India
A landmark step towards growth of Indian GIS Industry
A task force has been constituted by Department of Science and Technology (DST) to deliberate upon the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NGDI).
The
task force is a result of a series of discussion with various Ministries of Government of India, Non Governmental Organisations and Private Sector. The task force will look after the various aspects of NGDI such as its structure, content, policy, legal and commercial dimensions. It is envisaged that the Task Force will come out with background paper and future policy directions to be put forth in the discussion during the Workshop to be held on 5-6 February 2001. It is expected that the findings of the task force will lead to an Act that will facilitate uniform standards with regard to data generation and distribution.
The task force may be considered as a major breakthrough in the direction on developing the NGDI for India. In fact, use of high quality and reliable geo-spatial information is critical to virtually every sphere of socio – economic activity like disaster management, rural/urban planning and development, land development, forestry, agriculture, business geographics and infrastructure development. Much of geo-spatial information is available with various organization in various formats. A need has been felt from time to time to develop some sort of uniform standards and guidelines with regard to generation and distribution of geo-spatial information. This will ensure better integration and utilization of geo-spatial for overall development of the nation.
Centre for Spatial Database Management and Solutions – an NGO exclusively devoted to promote GIS technology in this region, has been also invited to be a member of the Task force and contribute in preparing the draft of the proposed NGDI for India.
