    ESRI's new releases

Image109ESRI has announced the release of ArcView Business Analyst 1.1, a desktop GIS solution for business. ArcView Business Analyst 1.1 is a powerful tool for making better business decisions, by combining the full functionality of ArcView GIS with data analysis tools. ArcView Business Analyst is available for Windows 95/98/2000 and Windows NT. The international version of ArcView GIS 3.2 is another release of ESRI. Some of the major areas of enhancement in ArcView GIS 3.2 include: general performance enhancements, shapefile projection utility, updated Database Access Version 2.0, new Report Writer extension - Seagate Crystal Reports Version 7.0, updated data integration utilities and new sample utilities and extensions. Another ESRI release is ArcView Spatial Analyst 2.0, which includes the new ModelBuilder and allows users to build and interact with spatial models. The user can construct models using process wizards or by dragging icons representing data (grid themes) and functions (such as slope, buffer and overlay) into the model document.

    Enhancement for GeoMedia

Image112 A range of enhancements for GeoMedia has been announced by Intergraph. Significant new functional supports are, geocoding and address matching, which will provide full support for MapInfo, AutoCAD, Microstation and other GIS packages. GeoMedia 3.0, the new release, facilitates the "geospatial integration of enterprises". A further addition to the product includes GeoMedia Web Enterprise, designed to provide a cost-effective and flexible platform for geospatial projects.

    ESRI and NIMA agreement

ESRI, and the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), the largest mapping and geospatial information organisation in the world, have entered into a blanket purchase agreement (BPA) with an estimated purchase value of $22.4 million for GIS software and software maintenance.

A multi-lingual release by PCI Geomatics

Image113 PCI Geomatics has announced the release of ACE version 3.1, the desktop mapping software. The new version of Advanced Cartographic Environment includes the ability to enter text and annotation in Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew. It also supports additional native languages like Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. This is PCI Geomatics’ first step towards supporting different languages with unique syntax requirements. Other improvements include increased speed, new display option for surround elements and improved printing and font support for Windows platforms. Since ACE 3.1 provides a way for users to present the results of their analysis professionally, it can be called as an extension to all GIS, remote sensing and CAD systems. For maintaining spatial accuracy, it offers the user a complete solution for easy application of conventional symbols to their maps. ACE supports all major map projections and the user can directly read and write raster, vector and other information from a list of over 50 supported file formats.

    R2V version 5.0

Image114 Able Software has announced the release of R2V version 5.0, its automated raster to vector conversion software for mapping and GIS data capture applications.

The new release includes improvements to the fully automatic raster to vector conversion function to vectorise both black/white and true colour images with a single command. New image mosaic function provides a simple layout interface for creating a seamless mosaic image from multiple sub images. Most image types, including 1-bit monochrome, 8-bit greyscale and 8 or 24-bit colour images can be used by this function. Users with small format scanners can now scan smaller sections and merge them together for vectorisation and other processing. The image warp and registration function has added options to use either bi-linear or triangulation for more accurate image geometric transformation based on control point selection. Other image processing functions include colour image classification, geo-referencing, dark background removal, etc.

    RouteX Developer Kit

    Image115 Image116

RouteX Developer Kit has been launched by MapCentric from Dataview Solutions. RouteX is a platform independent ActiveX control, based on the popular routing and drivetime analysis package RouteView. The RouteX Developer Kit is flexible enough to be used with all standard programming languages and can be used with or without a mapping component. Fast and accurate, it is an ideal solution for use on the Internet or Intranet. A free 30-day trial version is available at http://www.mapcentric.co.uk

    LHS’s New Scanning Workstation

Image118 A new Windows NT version of DSW500 Digital Scanning Workstation has been launched by LH Systems. It is a photogrammetric scanner with a more userfriendly interface plus improved reliability and performance. Similar to DSW300, launched in 1996, the DSW500 also has high speed and roll film capability combined with geometric precision and radiometric fidelity for all types of imagery including colour and false colour negative films.
